Both Lara and her villainous counterpart, Matthias (Walton Goggins) are fantastic characters who have a really interesting dynamic throughout the film, but I'd like to see Vikander spread her wings and Croft become the full-fledged action hero that Indiana Jones already was in his first outing. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider is a 2001 action adventure film based on the Tomb Raider video game series featuring the character Lara Croft, portrayed by Angelina Jolie.An international co-production between the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan and Germany, it was directed by Simon West and revolves around Lara Croft trying to obtain ancient artifacts in competition with the Illuminati. This is, essentially, a female-led Indiana Jones. It should become a blockbuster franchise and in a just universe, Vikander would become a huge star in the process.

If only we didn’t need the sequel to give us the movie we wanted to see. Even bogged down by origins, there is a bit of letting “Croft be Croft.” I hope we get a sequel, because the world needs more female-led action franchises, and I want to see more of this Croft in full-on adventurer mode. It offers a great female action hero with has a wry sense of humor and the ability to run with Tom Cruise-like intensity. Tomb Raider is a solid action flick and a decent video game adaptation. Lara’s characterization in this movie functions as a more grounded, somewhat sarcastic, and slightly less serious version of her character in the 2013 Tomb Raider game. As Lara sets out to find the lost city of Kitezh beneath Russia, she employs an impressive arsenal of weaponry to complete the task. I’ve played a number of the older games, and really really loved the recent reboot of Tomb Raider (the game that this movie adapted) and Rise of the Tomb Raider. If I see a Tomb Raider movie, I want to see a rich, brilliant, athletic, gun-totting ass-kicker who raids tombs not because she has to or needs to, but because she wants to. Lara Croft is the fiercely independent daughter of an eccentric adventurer, lost to her when she was barely a teen. You want a strong female character? That's Original Lara Croft (not the weepy one that apologizes to the deer she kills)! She doesn't need to be "woke", she doesn't need to be "softened" or made "realistic".
